New Study: Vitamins Alter Aging

The New Nutrition - Dr Michael Colgan 

Dr Colgan shows that the food and water supplies in the United States and dependence upon drugs to maintain health have caused our nation-wide health crisis that can be directly measured the United States ranking 20th out of 26 developed countries around the world (Amer. Journal of Clinical Nutrition http://www.ajcn.org/cgi/reprint/55/6/1196S) after ranking 10th in 1950.  

Degraded Food Supply

The author explains that the decline of our health begins with our deteriorating food supply. Our foods today are overloaded in fat, sugar and salt to lower the cost of production and preservation and to compensate for the loss in taste of foods depleted of nutrients.  Foods have been stripped of nutrients by commercial farming dependence on nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium, which grow fine-looking crops with high yields but few of the essential minerals like selenium, Chromium, calcium, magnesium, iron, copper, iodine, molybdenum, zinc, cobalt, boron and vanadium because the soils have not been replenished with these minerals.  Our food supply has been further degraded by mass-production methods of ripening, storing, drying, blanching, pasteurization, hydrogenation, ultra-filtration and multiple other practices of modern food processing as well as contaminated with pesticides. 

He continues with revelations that livestock and poultry are so sickly that half of the antibiotics produced in America are fed routinely to these animals and passed on to people eating commercially grown meat.  Of course the food-poisoning bacteria like salmonella are becoming resistant to these antibiotics and killing thousands of Americans each year and making millions of others sick.  Fish and shellfish are also a sad story with investigations finding spoiling fish and clams in supermarkets contaminated with bacteria from feces, mercury, lead and arsenic. 

Health Challenges and The Solution

The author discusses a number of health challenges such as heart disease, cancer, and osteoporosis and aging including what not to do and what cures you should pursue.  Then he provides an overview of vitamins and minerals and a guide to buying the right supplements.  He explains how antioxidants can strengthen immunity that prevents these diseases.  Table 3 provides complete list of “59 nutrients needed optimal bodily function” that cannot be obtained by eating commercial produced food. 

The Miracle of Whey Protein

Dr Colgan proclaims that whey protein from milk enhances immunity up to 500% and that other proteins have little effect. The main reason is that whey contains a much higher level of cysteine than most other proteins. Cysteine is the precursor of glutathione, one of the strongest antioxidants in your body (See The Network Antioxidants-Glutathione).

The studies show that glutathione levels increase rapidly in animals who are fed whey concentrate, and it is this increase that enhances immunity.  So, if you are using a protein drink for meal replacement or muscle building, make sure its first protein ingredient is whey protein concentrate.

Weight Loss and Restoring Memory

He also provides several chapters on managing weight through nutrition and exercise including Table 13 providing his “Twenty Steps to Lean For Life” program.  Dr. Colgan also wrote a chapter on how to “Save Your Brain” explaining what happened to our brains as we age and what supplements to take to keep the brain healthy and to maintain memory and keep the mind sharp.

Michael Colgan, PhD, CCN, is a biochemist and physiologist nutritionist.  From 1971 through 1982 Colgan was a senior member of the Science Faculty at the University of Auckland in New Zealand.[1] In 1972 he started the Colgan Institute in Auckland, New Zealand. Dedicated to Nutrition Science the Colgan Institute has since moved to San Diego, California and Saltspring Island, British Columbia, Canada. According to the Institute's website the Colgan Institute is "...a consulting, educational and research facility concerned with the effects of nutrition on physical performance and on inhibiting the degeneration of aging."

     

The Antioxidant Miracle - Lester Packer and Carol Colman

This is the best book written about antioxidants, how they work and what they do for people that take them.  Dr. Lester Packer is the world’s foremost antioxidant research scientist.  He explains that antioxidants are a family of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that help us live longer, healthier lives preventing to occurrence of disease and illness and slowing the aging process that numbs the mind and wrinkles the skin.  An impressive feature of this book are the dozen’s and dozens of studies discussed that prove the benefits of each antioxidant and the references in the appendices for follow-up verification by the reader.  There are hundreds of antioxidants and Dr. Packer identifies the many of them, what foods we must eat to consume them, and the Packer Plan for supplement regimen to achieve optimal health.

Antioxidants were given this name by food chemists who discovered these vitamins protected food from oxidization process that caused food to spoil.  Antioxidants improve our health and extend our lifetimes by preventing unstable molecules called free radicals from damaging our body’s cell structures.  Free radicals are products of the normal course of cellular energy production, but are also caused by certain chemicals, smoke, pollutants and radiation.  We need antioxidants fight to these free radicals which, if not neutralized, cause or aggravate cancers, heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, diabetes arthritis and other illnesses and accelerate the aging process in our bodies. 

The Network Antioxidants

Dr. Packer calls five key anti-oxidants vitamins C and E, Co Q10, lipoic acid (alpha lipoic acid) and glutathione, the Network Antioxidants, because they have special powers to regenerate each other after neutralizing free radicals.  When an antioxidant meets a free radical, it engulfs the free radical neutralizing its power to damage cells, but in the process the antioxidant becomes a weak free radical itself and unable to fight more free radicals.  However, another network antioxidant can regenerate the weaken antioxidant so it can once again neutralize another free radical.  Vitamins C and Co Q10 are fat soluble working in cell membrances, Vitamins C and glutathione are water soluble traveling in the blood to cell internal sap and lipoic acid functions in both zones and is the only network antioxidant that can regenerate glutathione. Glutathione is the most abundant antioxidant in the body and must be maintained because low levels often causes illness and when glutathione levels are extremely low, death usually occurs.

Dr. Packer provides separate chapters discussing and providing the specific benefits of:

Dr. Packer then provides the chapter titled “An Antioxidant Feast: Food is Powerful Medicine” in which he identifies the fruits and vegetables that present the best sources of antioxidants.  He recommends eating seven to ten servings of these antioxidant-rich foods every day.  Dr. Packer says there is no substitute for a healthy-well balanced diet.  Supplements can help enhance the health benefits of food, but they cannot do the job alone.

The Packer Plan

Dr. Packer presents the Packer Plan for supplementation regimen.  He provides a supplement regimen for the morning and the evening along with special instructions for selecting the best supplement products. He also provides additional suggestions for the special needs of Smokers, Diabetics, Athletes, Menopausal Women, People with High Risk of Cancer, People with High Risk of Cardiovascular Disease and Picky Eaters.  Dr. Packer also provides a chapter titled Antioxidants for Healthy Beautiful Skin providing antioxidant crèmes and gels for protecting and nourishing the skin.

Dr. Lester Packer has published over 700 scientific papers and 70 books on every aspect of antioxidants and health, including the standard references "Vitamin E in Health and Disease", "Vitamin C in Health and Disease", "The Handbook of Natural Antioxidants" and "Understanding the Process of Aging: The Roles of Mitochondria, Free Radicals, and Antioxidants".
